Overview
Don Giovanni wants everything, and everyone. In 1960s Spain, a country long sealed off under Franco is cracking open to new money, new freedoms and new ideas, and Giovanni rapaciously consumes every pleasure this moment offers.
Then a night of violence leaves a man dead, and the pleasures stop working. Chasing a high that no longer comes, Giovanni loses his grip on reality. When the dead man returns to demand his repentance, Giovanni refuses, even as hell opens beneath him. It is one of opera’s most thrilling and unsettling finales.
Driven by Mozart’s devastatingly charming music, this seductive, funny and genuinely dangerous new production, directed by Patrick Nolan, asks whether it is possible to survive in a world without a moral centre.
A co-production between Opera Queensland and West Australian Opera.
