Acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians

We pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors of this land, their spirits and their legacy. The foundations laid by these ancestors give strength, inspiration and courage to current and future generations, both First Nations and non-First Nations peoples, towards creating a better Queensland.

Overview

Quicker than an intake of breath our universe hurled itself into existence. Hot. Dense. A single point moving at unimaginable speeds, stretching and expanding towards being, towards discovering, understanding, knowing, building, creating … conquering

In this infinite cosmos our world is a small but beautiful fragment, we, Homo sapiens, are said to represent a mere 14 seconds of its condensed cosmic existence. 14 seconds; the time it took for Apollo 13 to make its mid-course correction before landing in the Pacific Ocean. The time the average person decides if they like how they look in the mirror each day. Longer than firing a gun and the average hug. Not quite enough time to boil an egg, calm your nerves or sing the chorus of Beyonce’s “Love on Top”, but more than enough time to tell someone they are loved …

We humans have expanded and reinvented ourselves at a startling rate exploring the mystical, building the impossible and taking the greatest leaps of faith to arrive at this point. Beyond the precipice of great advancement, in a time of much change – for our climate, our connectedness, our evolution. We have achieved much in our 14 seconds, but at what cost?

A collision of physical and visual languages, The Next 14 Seconds by Phluxus2 Dance Collective draws from the disciplines of dance, theatre, visual and sound design to explore a rich tapestry inspired by human evolution. Choreographed by the award-winning Nerida Matthaei (Angel Monster, Love Stories) this project brings together a talented ensemble of five dancers, Jade Brider, Hsin-Ju Ely, Georgia Peirce, Asher Bowen Saunders and Jacob Watton as well as leading local practitioners Lisa Fa'alafi (costume design), Arabella Walker (visual artistry), Ben Ely and Haami Te Kuru (sound design), Keith Clark (lighting design/production), Dan Evans (dramaturg). Be the first to witness this world premiere production that demands we look at where we have come, where we are heading and if we like where we are going?

When you stretch your toes over the abyss of the future what are you willing to change in the next 14 seconds?
