Overview
Inspired by the countryside outside Vienna, Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony evokes the peace and tranquillity he found in nature. “No one can love the country as much as I do”, he once wrote.
Birdsong is faithfully recreated in the score: the nightingale by the flute, the quail by the oboe, and the cuckoo by the clarinets; while cellos imitate undulating water in a murmuring brook, the double basses, timpani and trombone clatter out a fierce storm.
Meanwhile, with the witty and subtle Eighth, Beethoven breathed new life into the symphonic genre, and its surprising turns are wilfully deceptive right from the opening bar.
Written for the 250th anniversary since Beethoven’s birth, Anna Clyne’s Stride is a humorous and virtuosic response to the great master’s driving energy and vitality.
