Overview

The journey continues

There’s a reason Mahler’s Symphony No.7 was chosen to open our Maestro season for 2024: it’s an absolute epic! Clocking in at over an hour, this turn-of-the-century masterwork is packed with action. A rollicking first movement holds glimmers of victory between boasting brass and feverish flutes. The centre of the work conjures the dark of night, birds calling from their hiding places – but do sinister figures lurk in the shadows? You’ll hear it all under the baton of our Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici, who lifts this symphony to its tremendously happy ending.

“Mahler 7 is a very special symphony that celebrates the grandeur and the power of Nature. This year’s season opening is a journey from the night to the day, a symphony of victory. After the hammer of his 6th symphony, symbolising the blows of Destiny, in his 7th Mahler includes a guitar, a mandolin and two harps and the gentle clanking of distant cowbells evokes rural moods and rustic dances. Surging from the night music, the Finale is a wild and wonderful movement that leads us to the light and the joy of life. Come and celebrate it with us!” Umberto Clerici
