Were you ever a young pyjama-clad pilgrim pressing your nose to the glass of a magical Myer Christmas window? A hip and happening 1960’s theatre goer? An opera fan in the 1980s and beyond, or more recently, an aspiring dancer performing with one of Queensland’s foremost youth ballet companies? Chances are you’ve met Max.

For more than 60 years, prolific designer and visual artist Max Hurley shared his prodigious talent with Queensland audiences and theatre makers.

Here we recall his extraordinary theatrical legacy through set, costume and graphic design, his involvement with pivotal moments in Queensland theatrical history, his fine art practice and demonstrated capacity to sustain a long and successful career as a creative practitioner.

In his lifetime Max Hurley brought his talent, skill, wit and personality to an incredible range of creative work from childhood up until the week of his death in 2019.

Max Hurley's sketch of Rosalinda from "Die Fledermaus" a famous operetta known for its comedic elements and is often performed in the operatic repertoire. Rosalinda is one of the main characters in the opera, and the plot revolves around her and her husband's escapades at a grand party.
