QPAC

One of the best parts of the TechConnect program has been getting to know each of our trainees and hearing about the different paths that brought them into technical production. 

There is no single pathway in this industry. Some people arrive through community theatre, some through film, some after discovering a love of backstage work at school, and others simply because they enjoy making things, solving problems and working with their hands. 

This edition we're introducing Nova Blakley, who has been working with the Wardrobe team at QPAC. 

Nova has a wonderfully thoughtful way of looking at the world. Quietly observant, endlessly curious and happiest when making things with their hands, they've embraced every opportunity to learn. 

Over the past few months, Nova has worked across productions including The Drover's Wife and MJ the Musical, gradually taking on more responsibility as their confidence has grown. 

What stood out most during our conversation was Nova's genuine excitement about learning. Whether it's repairing costumes, painting shoes or creating realistic wear and tear on costumes, every task is another opportunity to build new skills. 

One of Nova's proudest moments came during Beetlejuice, when the team couldn't find the performers' microphone belts. 

Remembering that they'd helped pack everything away the day before, Nova suggested checking a portable hot box where they'd been left to dry. 

"They were all there," Nova laughed. 

"It probably only saved everyone about ten minutes of searching, but as the trainee it felt like a huge moment. Everyone else seems to know everything, so it was nice to be able to help and contribute." 

Looking ahead, Nova hopes to continue developing wardrobe repair skills, explore props and one day become qualified in testing and tagging. 

When asked about their dream production to work on, the answer came instantly. 

"Cats." 

"My autistic special interest has always been cats." 

As a child, Nova attended Cats at QPAC wearing cat ears, a tail and face paint before being surrounded by performers during the show. 

"I don't think I'll ever feel that cool again."

Stories like Nova's are a lovely reminder that sometimes the audience members who fall in love with theatre grow up to become the people creating the magic behind the scenes.
