Overview

Joseph Tawadros, oud
James Tawadros, req
Matt McMahon, piano

World music is rendered intriguingly local by Egyptian Australian Joseph Tawadros AM, virtuoso of the seven-string oud and leading contemporary composer for this ancient instrument. With lute-like strains mesmerizing jazz, classical and folk collaborators alike, Tawadros lists artists such as Richard Tognetti and Lior as regular collaborators and boasts a following spanning western Europe, the Middle East/Arab world and Australia’s own ARIA charts with his ABC Classics recordings.

Immerse yourself in this QPAC debut, as global themes of truth, love and war are rendered tangible at very close range. Allow your mind to wander over the elegant pianism of Matt McMahon and the distinct percussiveness of brother James Tawadros’ Egyptian req – a small hand-held tambourine – drawn together by the exotic familiarity of oud strings in Joseph’s intuitive hands.

PROGRAM

Selections from Tawadros' ARIA award-winning albums including The Hour of Separation, Permission to Evaporate and Truth Seekers, Lovers and Warriors.
