Where is home? Why is there so much music about yearning to return there?
Consider the traveller, on the road, under the stars, crossing the ocean to seek a new life in a city of strangers. Which is the stronger – the need to go on, or the desire to return?
Powerful and subtle, The Boxties follow up their 2016-17 QPAC show Bound Away to Leave You with an atmospheric selection of songs. They draw on the traditional musical lore of Britain and Ireland, and the works of Sondheim and Sting. The songs take us here and there, touching on ideas of home, longing and exile (with the odd digression).
The Boxties is a ten-piece chamber ensemble performing an eclectic range of traditional and contemporary music. Their artistic director is Steph McCaw.
In City of Strangers, they are joined by guest performers from their Boxties Mentorship Program for young musicians, and the FHEAL Choir, who made their debut with The Boxties earlier this year, in QPAC’s Songs of Hope and Healing.
Also on board are regular Boxties collaborators David Walters (lighting design), Bill Haycock (design) and James Harper (words).
