Beethoven Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano
Shostakovich Symphony No.5 in D minor
A concerto is typically a piece of music for solo instrument and orchestra, but in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, he gave the solo part to three instruments: violin, cello and piano. This Concerto is grand and beautiful and a great way to open this 250th anniversary year of Beethoven’s birth. It will be performed by three brilliant young talents of Australian classical music: Emily Sun, Caleb Wong and Aura Go. There have been debates over whether Shostakovich’s spectacular Symphony No.5 was secretly criticising Stalinist Russia. Whatever its hidden messages, it earned a half-hour standing ovation when it was first heard, and we can’t wait to wow our audiences with this masterpiece. In this concert we are also delighted to introduce the world to new music by talented Australian composer Melody Eötvös.
