Milliken, C Earth Plays, mvt.1 Þingvellir
Strauss, R Concerto No.1 in E flat for Horn and Orchestra
Saint-Saëns Symphony No.3 (Organ Symphony)
The French horn is the gorgeous singing instrument of the brass family and there is no more joyous use of the horn than in Richard Strauss’ 1st Horn Concerto. That alone would be reason to smile, but performed by Stefan Dohr, our guest artist for the evening and Principal Horn of the Berlin Philharmonic, it will be magical. The melodies will continue as Australian conductor Benjamin Northey leads us in the grand finale of the evening: Saint-Saëns’ mighty ‘Organ’ Symphony. The main theme is famous from its appearance in the movie Babe, and in its original format it’s an exhilarating, room-shaking burst of happiness. In case that wasn’t enough, we’ll also include the cheeky The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
