Continuing the celebrations from 2020 for the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, Piers Lane will perform two of his greatest sonatas. The ‘Pathetique’ is one of Beethoven’s most beloved sonatas; the slow movement is exquisite and particularly adored by the public. The opening melody of Sonata No 31 in A flat major is ravishingly beautiful; its refinement and aristocratic beauty takes on an almost spiritual element. In the second half of the program Piers performs the complete Chopin waltzes – gracious, decorative, melancholy, sparkling, the brightest jewels in the crown.

London-based Australian pianist Piers Lane AO has a flourishing international career, performing with many of the world’s top orchestras and conductors. Five times soloist at the BBC Proms, his wide-ranging concerto repertoire exceeds 100 works including Busoni’s epic piano concerto, which he performed at Carnegie Hall. His extensive discography of over 60 CDs, primarily for Hyperion Records, includes much admired recordings of rare Romantic piano concertos. Piers Lane is Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition
