The “funniest musical of all time” (Entertainment Weekly),…
Embracing the ‘Best of British’ music in all its richness and diversity is a perennial treat for both the Queensland Pops Orchestra and our fabulous and enthusiastic audiences...it’s all hands on deck, and everyone takes part in one of the best-loved orchestral events in the Pops calendar.
Best of British keeps coming back for one very good reason: the stirring voices and symphonic sounds culminate in the much-anticipated ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ grand finale with full orchestral and choral forces, leading the audience in true patriotic fervour! Let the Queensland Pops Orchestra take you on a journey through green and pleasant lands in a concert that celebrates some of Great Britain’s finest music.
With a spotlight on the music of England and London, there’ll be soaring strings, dazzling brass fanfares and noble woodwind themes from start to finish in this ever-popular and quintessentially British musical extravaganza. The stirring melody of ‘Land of Hope And Glory’ was a landmark theme not just for composer Sir Edward Elgar, but for British music in general – and it will return in full symphonic technicolour, along with all the very best Old Blighty has to offer: anthems, folk songs, sea shanties and more.
Who could forget “Jerusalem” and “Rule Britannia”...just two of the rainbow tapestry of British musical colours to be unfurled (and remember flag waving is compulsory!). Treading the boards for the 2020 Best of British concerts, the Queensland Pops Orchestra is delighted to welcome back two of opera’s brightest stars, soprano Elizabeth Lewis – fresh from her time in the US, where she has been wowing audiences in opera productions in myriad starring roles – and popular bass-baritone Teddy Tahu-Rhodes. Critics have praised Elizabeth’s powerful voice and beguiling stage presence. A recipient of the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship 2017 from the Australia Council for the Arts, Elizabeth was finalist in the 2019 Opera Awards from the Music and Opera Singers Trust of Australia. More recently, Elizabeth returned to her native Brisbane to sing the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos under the baton of Simone Young at the Lisa Gasteen National Opera School.
Teddy Tahu Rhodes’ deeply dulcet tones have rapidly forged him an international career on both the opera stage and concert platform. Teddy has performed with opera companies across the USA, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Vienna, and the Scottish and Welsh National Opera. Add to that a plethora of prestigious awards: an ARIA, two Helpmanns, a Limelight, a Green Room and an MO Award (Operatic Performer of the Year).
Joining this sumptuous vocal duo will be Pops favourites the Voices of Birralee and the Toowoomba Choral Society Contemporary Choral, plus the latest generation from Brisbane’s premier Scottish dance troupe – the Thistle Highland Dancers, who’ve been with the Pops since the very beginning.
No-one does Best of British like the Queensland Pops Orchestra – it’s an institution! From Edward Elgar to Ed Sheeran, the British have a magic touch when it comes to entertaining the masses. Be part of history in the making in the bumper year of 2020. With maestro Patrick Pickett heading a star-studded company of devoted Anglophiles, this will be an event you just can’t miss!
Smoke, fog, and pyrotechnics will be used in this performance.
