Puppetry arrived in Australia in the form of Punch and Judy shows in the 1840s. Since that time, a rich tradition of Australian puppetry performance has grown to encompass a multitude of styles from traditional to avant-garde, often reflecting social and cultural change. As an art form, puppetry is driven by the passion and skill of artisans and storytellers – puppet people – who in this age of technology continue to enthral audiences young and old as they bring their wonderful creations to life in real time.
