With its hauntingly beautiful ensemble of tutus gliding eerily through the forest, Giselle is classical tradition in all its purity and splendour
Featuring an international cast of La Scala’s principal and guest dancers, Giselle continues to thrill audiences with its contrast between sunny village life and a dark and terrible kingdom inhabited by spirits.
A tale of unrequited love, betrayal and redemption, Giselle is the story of an innocent peasant girl who dies of a broken heart upon learning her beloved Albrecht is engaged to someone else. Resurrected in the afterlife by the vengeful Wili maidens, Giselle must perform the ultimate act of forgiveness to prevent Albrecht falling prey to their irresistible dance.
Featuring the original Coralli-Perrot choreography in this revival by Yvette Chauviré, this production of Giselle is one of La Scala Ballet’s most popular in recent seasons and international tours. La Scala Ballet Company pays homage to the late Chauviré: in her version of Giselle, performed at La Scala for the first time in 1950, Chauviré herself starred as the ill-fated peasant girl. Adolphe Adam’s hauntingly beautiful score is brought to vivid life by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

What to expect
A tale of love, betrayal and redemption set amid joyous peasant celebrations, Giselle features a contrast between a sunny carefree world and a dark and terrible kingdom inhabited by spirits.
As the choreography unfolds, peasant girl Giselle and Prince Albrecht are required to vary the technical and expressive register from carefree jollity to despair, from easy going self-assuredness to the awareness that life has no purpose without love.
Celebrated étoile, Yvette Chauviré, whose choreographic restaging of Giselle you will be seeing, alluded to the challenges of the role when she said, “Experiencing true love and the hurt of betrayal in the first act and then becoming a floating sprite, a Wili, immediately afterward in the second act, is no easy feat. It is a long journey.”
Village girl, Giselle, falls in love with Prince Albrecht, who is in disguise. Giselle ignores her mother’s warnings of the Wilis, the maidens who died before marriage and who, transformed into spirits, lure the men whom they encounter by night and compel them to dance to death. When the true identity of the prince is revealed, Giselle, who feels betrayed, tries to kill herself with Albrecht’s sword, then she goes mad and dies of a broken heart.
Later, Albrecht, seized with remorse, returns to the village. Albrecht finds Giselle again, but is condemned by the law of the Wilis to dance until he dies. In vain the prince begs for forgiveness. Giselle attempts to save him by dancing with him until the sun rises.
