QPAC 2017 International Series

The Royal Ballet

The Royal Ballet has returned to London following its exclusive visit to Queensland for the 2017 QPAC International Series and their season heralded a resounding success.

The Royal Ballet’s time with us was more than what you saw on stage and as you will read below, The Royal Ballet and QPAC worked together on a range of programs and events as part of the 2017 QPAC International Series to provide opportunities for them to connect more broadly with our community.

The QPAC International Series is about bringing the world’s best arts companies to perform exclusively in Queensland. This is great for audiences and this year, allowed more than 21,000 people to engage with the company through performances in Brisbane and Cairns to amplify the impact and legacy of this program.

Below are some of the ways The Royal Ballet was immersed in our community during their stay in Queensland:

  • More than 250 participants from around Queensland as well as 20 Queensland-based teaching artists took part in a four-month community engagement program called We All Dance. We All Dance was about connecting artists and communities through workshops and masterclasses exploring dance and movement, facilitated by teaching artists from The Royal Ballet in collaboration with community organisations in Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Caboolture and Cairns. The workshops culminated in two performances; one at QPAC on 2 July and the other in Cairns ahead of the Gala Performance by The Royal Ballet on 12 July. This was one of the biggest community outreach programs facilitated by QPAC as part of the International Series.
  • More than 80 talented local dancers, from Queensland Ballet, Expressions Dance Company and from across the dance industry were inspired by Masterclasses led by The Royal Ballet’s Resident Choreographer, Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon. In addition, two Creative Insights events, offering the chance to hear directly from these esteemed choreographers about the creative process behind Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale, were attended by 380 ballet fans.
  • The Royal Ballet visit also engaged Queensland artists, including members of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, who accompanied both ballets, and its Music Director Alondra de la Parra, who conducted five performances of The Winter’s Tale. A total of 20 children aged 10 to 13 years old shared the stage with The Royal Ballet dancers, with both ballets featuring children’s roles. Four adult dancers were also engaged as extras in The Winter’s Tale.

This season by The Royal Ballet has been a highlight on QPAC’s events calendar for 2017. The success is thanks to many, including our audiences who have told us that this season was ‘extraordinary in every aspect’ and a ‘masterpiece’. We have been heartened by your response as has The Royal Ballet who were amazed at the generosity and warmth of our Queensland audiences.

This Royal Ballet tour has been professional perfection. Thank you for bringing the tour to our shores – most grateful.”
The Winter's Tale review, Eva (audience member)
Once occasionally in a lifetime you become aware that you are experiencing something very special. Such is the case with The Royal Ballet’s “The Winters Tale”. The 3-hour performance was totally captivating; exquisite and like no ballet I have ever seen before. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to excitement and wonder that I thought long gone. Congratulations to The Royal Ballet company and all involved in bringing this wonderful production to Brisbane.
