About Teusner Wines
The philosophy at Teusner Wines is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit that they source from old, well maintained vineyards. The fruit is sourced predominantly from family and close friends, which allows Teusner this selectivity in which fruit they vinify.
In 2010, this eye for excellence was recognised with stellar reviews in James Halliday’s Wine Companion, scoring a swag of scores in the 90’s and a juicy five red stars for the winery rating.
Teusner’s 2008 Dog Strangler Mataro picked up the Best Alternative Red Wine in Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh’s Big Red Wine Book and the 2009 vintage made the cut for James Halliday’s Top 100 in the Weekend Australian in 2010.
The winery had great success in the 2010 Barossa Wine Show entering five wines for a haul of five medals and three trophies including one for Most Successful Exhibitor at the show. The 2009 Joshua Grenache Mataro Shiraz picked up top gold and the trophy for Best Grenache Mataro Shiraz and the 2009 The Independent Shiraz Mataro grabbed the top gold and the trophy for the Best Dry Red, Other Varieties and Blends.
The 2006 Astral Series Mataro featured in the “Best of the Best” section of Nick Stock’s 2011 Good Wine Guide. Scoring a healthy 96 points and the 2009 The Independent Shiraz Mataro received the award for Best Value Red Wine of the Year.
About Kym Teusner
Kym Teusner graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Science (Oenology Major) in 2001. He was focused upon returning to the Barossa and experimenting with Rhone varieties that grow so well there. Once finished his studies, this drive led him to work with several high profile producers of Rhone style wines whilst working on the launch of his own label.
In 2001, Kym, by chance, heard about an old Grenache vineyard in the Northern Barossa Valley. The vineyard’s low yields and low prices being paid by the ‘Big Boys’ meant that it was running at a loss and was facing certain destruction! Kym was loath to hear this and raised the capital to keep these precious old vines in the ground. Their first release from this and several other old blocks, was 165 cases of 2002 Joshua. In addition to this about eight hogsheads of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz was put aside, destined to be released around 24 months later as Avatar.
