Kicking Up Dust: From Grass Roots To Centre Stage
Timed to coincide with the World Dance Congress in Brisbane (14-18 July), QPAC presents a free exhibition celebrating Indigenous dance in Australia - from the traditional dance of remote communities in Cape York to the dance of urban Indigenous youth and the internationally acclaimed contemporary dance of Bangarra Dance Theatre.
Featuring work by Cairns-based photographer, Kerry Trapnell, documenting the Laura Dance Festival, the local environment and rock art, together with a large-screen DVD presentation Laura Legend & Lore, the exhibition also features related music and dance artefacts from the region.
Kicking up Dust is curated by QPAC Museum with the assistance of consultant Curator, Elverina Johnson, a Kuganji woman from Yarrabah who previously worked with QPAC Museum on the Blow 'im: Yarrabah Brass Band exhibition.
