Roger Woodward, whose Bach performances were described as the most searching since Glenn Gould's, makes his only Australian appearance in his 70th birthday year. The Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, Eivind Aadland, returns to conduct Mahler's Ninth Symphony, the crowning glory of the great Austro- Germanic symphonic tradition which began with Haydn and Mozart. The Ninth is a work of genius, with passages of anguished beauty juxtaposed with mock-gaiety and sardonic wit. The final adagio is one of Mahler's most profound and moving statements, full of majestic resignation and far from earthly tribulations.
