Sophie Min Trio
Sophie Min is a Korean jazz pianist who moved to Australia in 2010. Having previously studied jazz at the Seoul Institute of Arts, Sophie is completing her major at the Queensland Conservatorium, alongside Helen Svoboda (bass) and Lachlan Hawkins (drums), who feature in her trio.
The Sophie Min Trio plays a range of jazz standards and a series of Sophie's innovative compositions including Sophie's arrangement of Thelonious Monk's Epistrophy in 5/4 time, inspired by her love of irregular time feels. Original compositions include ‘Knock Blues’ - a slow blues which imitates the sound of someone knocking on a door, and ‘Wintertime’ - a ballad consisting of orchestral factors, namely spontaneous arpeggios which flow up and down fluidly.
Alongside their trio work, Sophie, Helen and Lachlan also play in jazz quartet Redshift, joined by guitarist Ravi Welsh. Also making an appearance at Green Jam Sessions, they will perform a number of jazz fusion compositions including Spirit of the West, by the Yellowjackets.
Green Love, comprised of local musicians from the modern music label ‘Green Chimneys Collective’, are an instrumental quartet performing music ranging from tough avant garde swing, raw afro-cuban beats, hip hop grooves, quiet ballads and bombastically loud blues.
An amalgamation of members taken from local Brisbane bands, the quartet sports a personnel notorious for producing an authentic, honest and distinctly Australian sound. Having performed at numerous reputable venues across the east coast of Australia, the members of Green Love are ready to share their love of music with Southbank.
The 12th of April will see the quartet exploring music from the 1960’s post bop groups, hip hop greats J Dilla, MF Doom, Madlib; Australian jazz saxophonists Zac Hurren and David Ades as well as originals from the band. Whether they’re animated and fiery, solemn and quiet, grooving or swinging hard, Green Love will knock your socks off, rock your jocks and melt your face off. Come along for some love!
