Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem, The Corsair, which sold ten thousand copies on the first day of publication, this three-act ballet was first performed at the Bolshoi in 1856. With a revival of the original Petipa ballet in 2007 by Yuri Burlaka and Alexei Ratmansky, this modern adaptation is a swashbuckling, romantic tale of pirates, slaves and oriental intrigue and is typical of the exotic and ambitious ballets created during the Tsarist era.

This extraordinary work, which the Bolshoi regards as one of the signature pieces of its exceptional repertoire, has never before been seen in Australia, another coup for Brisbane.

In 2013, QPAC will present two outstanding seasons from one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, the Bolshoi Ballet as part of QPAC’s International Series.

Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem, The Corsair, which sold ten thousand copies on the first day of publication, this three-act ballet was fi rst performed at the Bolshoi in 1856. It’s a swashbuckling, romantic tale of pirates, slaves and oriental intrigue and is typical of the exotic and ambitious ballets created during the Tsarist era. It is also one of the most spectacular (and expensive!) ever mounted by the Bolshoi and its many famous set pieces provide the perfect showcase for the company’s stars, the soloists and its magnificent corps de ballet.

Quite simply outstanding - seen Le Corsaire twice - wish I could see The Bolshoi in Spartacus, Swan Lake , Romeo & Juliet , Sleeping Beauty , Ivan The Terrible etc etc.....they will simply have to come back ! What a coup Brisbane - would have liked to see the company in a class - no matter what the cost - pity no Bolshoi Ballet merchandise was for sale - lifetime dream to see this company so thankyou !

The Bolshoi Ballet's Le Corsaire was a beautiful performance and of absolute perfection. The calibre of the production was world class, a true theatre experience.

Travelled from the Blue Mountains to see the performance and so glad that we did. Peerless experience. Would recommend the performance to theatre goers, ballet buffs or otherwise. Big win for Qpac to score over other venues.

Enchanting Ballet

Wonderful performance. I bought tickets as a birthday gift for my daughter and also my granddaughter who had not attended a ballet performance previously. It was a great introduction to this type of entertainment and we all enjoyed it immensely. If you have never seen a ballet, there's no better than the Bolshoi!

I saw the last performance of Le Corsaire yesterday and the live simulcast on Tuesday night. It was amazing. I loved the costumes and the sets. The simulcast audience was so entranced that we actually clapped throughout the performance. The dancers were so talented. I enjoyed it just as much as the last time I saw them 20 or so years ago. The Queensland Symphony orchestra also performed wonderfully and added so much to the performance. The harp was delightful. I was disappointed that there was no information as to who was dancing which role. It seemed to me that Medora was danced by 2 different dancers on Tuesday night and Wednesday. I could watch it again today. It was wonderful. I hope QPAC continues to offer live simulcasts of Ballet and Opera and music.

What a coup for Queensland Cultural Scene. QPAC & Producers Leo Schofield & Ian McRae are to be congratulated. Opening Gala Performance of Le Corsaire was grande and showcased excellence, majesty and forte in ballet as only the Russians could do. The dancers, stage sets, costumes and brilliant music from the QSO was memorable indeed. Principal dancer Maria Alexandriva's elegance, skill and presence were par excellence. Talk about en pointe!

I was delighted at the opening night. Firstly the sets which were magnificent — who could forget the final shipwreck? The dancing was superb and the orchestra in fine form. I have only two criticisms, however. The flow of the ballet was broken by the too frequent and often unnecessary breaks for the soloist or group of dancers stopping at the end of their set to take a bow — it gave the impression of "Look at me, arem't I lovely" and what in Australia might be called "milking" the audience. My other criticism was the final curtain. Why, in heaven's name, did you not draw the curtain and give the audience the chance to give a standing ovation to the whole cast? There were so few taking the applause when all deserved acclamation.
