with Queensland Symphony Orchestra

A masterpiece from first blush to final devastation.

Graeme Murphy is famous for bringing new life to classic ballets, and now he's tackled the greatest love story ever told: Romeo & Juliet. Traversing time and place, Murphy's ballet follows "a feisty girl and a feisty boy who are willing to take a stand for their love". Young passion smoulders at its core, but Murphy also tackles the consequences of greed and war, and asks what happens to humanity when love dies. This grand story is also grandly designed, with costumes by Australian fashion luminary Akira Isogawa and some of The Australian Ballet's most ambitious sets to date. The result is a masterpiece from first blush to final devastation.

I am not a ballet fan in general, in fact had been rarely during my 65 years. However this performance was brilliant. Story ell told, dancers agile, proficient and athletic, music fantastic, light and sets suberb and the atmosphere the performance set elcetric.

As an ex-professional dancer who trained with the Kirov Ballet, I was so disapointed with last nights performance of Romeo & Juliet. The first scene was embarrasing to say the least and so obviously under rehearsed. The scene with Juliet dancing with Friar Laurence in the second act was just cumbersome, the sequence where she was standing on his feet looked very awkward as her feet kept slipping off his and he seemed off balance the whole time. Since when is Verona in the middle of India, this ballet is a classic and it has remained that way for a reason. The sets were so distracting and the set of the sand dunes in the final scene was just ridiculous. The only saving grace were the principal dancers, they were obviously talented but even they looked like they were struggling with the awkward choreography throughout. There was very little technique displayed and nothing flowed. The preperations in an out of lifts were so obvious that nothing seemed effortless as it should when done well. The star of the show was the dancer playing Mercutio, he was a delight to watch and just a shame he was not on the stage more!

Loved it. The costumes and sets were fantastic!! Not sure about the 80's power suits in the desert though. The music and performance were wonderful. I hope the Australian Ballet comes to Brisbane every year like they used to.

Great Dancers,Great Scenery and Staging, Great Music well arranged and performed but I have been more excited by Graeme Murphy's earlier work. This choreography seemed to me to be an association between classical and contemporary dance movement that did not flow well.

This was vastly different from production we saw in Novosibirsk in Siberia in 2006. The story, the set, the music and the dance made it a magical evening that entranced us the whole performance. I was amazed how well the dancers and music were matched. Barbara and I were fascinated and did not want the music or dance to stop.

It was my first ballet, was a bit weird not having speaking or singing. The performance was so well done it was not hard at all keeping up with the story. The orchestra did not seem to miss a beat, well done.
An unforgettable experience

Wise, analytical critics can review this amazing show forever; Put simply, if you miss this moving and memorable performance, you will never ever forgive yourself; Congratulations to the brilliant Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and, (beyond analysis), the Australian Ballet is clearly among the best in the world.

The Australian Ballet Company is so very talented so why not create new ballets and leave the traditional ones alone? A medieval Italian love story with asian themes, slapstick, bicycles and a finale in the dessert. Come on!! Everything else brilliant as this company produces great ballets.

This was our first ballet, and we loved it, it was entertaining and colourful and the story flowed beautifully. I actually had tears in my eyes at the end. It was also our first visit to QPAC, and we hope to be back again.

I had a wonderful evening with the Australian Ballet and their performance of Romeo and Juliet. The dancing was sublime. The only confusing bit was the use of the push bikes but apart from that wonderful.

This the best ballet I have ever seen. Austraian Ballet is so bold, creative and brave to give us this performance. It was outstanding from start to finish. I particularly loved the balcony scene and the marriage scene. The costumes were amazing, truely beautiful. All the dancers were fantastic and I was in awe of their strength and ability. We were on the edge of our seats, my mum and my twin sister celebrating our birthdays. I am still thinking about it today and will recall wonderful scenes for a long time. There was suspense, drama, humour, and pure joy for the audience. The Wow factor was there from the beginning and sometimes it took my breath away, it was so amazing. I want to go again and again and again. Thank you so much for giving me such beauty. Other ballet companies would not be so bold and creative, it takes Australians to create this masterpiece, love you Graham Murphy and Janet Vernon.

Captured Romeo and Juliet's forbidden love perfectly. Benvolio and Mercutio were hilarious. There wasn't a Friar, but a 'Holy man' instead which was confusing, but other than that it was absolutely amazing!
